Did you enjoy the speakers and the presentations? What would you liked to have seen different?

I would have liked to have seen more student media related speakers. The mainstream media practitioners had little / nothing really to say about the issues we face whilst practicing student media. Maybe each editor of the various SA student publications could present next time... _________________ Gregor

Im not convinced that that is a good idea. I think there should be a time where student editors are able to present their ideas, issues etc. But i am not sure if other students would take the editors seriously as speakers.
I think that Gregor is right, there should be more student relevant speakers but im not sure how one does that while maintaining a level of education that Captivate strives for?? Just a thought. |

If we cant take editors seriously as speakers then what can we take them seriously for? If we want to relate to each other about our experiences and the challenges we have faced as well as the solutions and the general info about their newspapers/radio stations aren't the editors a good place to start with that?
I would have loved to have known more about the other student media operations when i was at Captivate...and in a more formal setting we can all get on the same page (excuse the pun). What I am trying to say is that isnt is time we started to take each other seriously and not just have a conference with media professionals talking to us and not with us? |

...all parties attending do so in the capacity of their publication or whatever medium they are representing. Hence, there would be no lack of respect towards editors.
That exactly is the problem, just because Natalie Dixon et al are from the mainstream media means they should not get more respect / taken more seriously than the student editor of a newspaper. To the contrary, I think delegates respect / take those who are working amongst them more serious, than a speaker who has little knowledge about what student media is about.
Level of education? I must be blunt here: there has not been much of a level of education simply because that has not been a priority yet. How much insight into student media have we gained from speakers such as Natalie Dixon, Graeme Joffrey, Sami Sabiti, Unathy Nkayi etc... in my opinion - none! They have offered ideas and perspective for the mainstream environment...not the student environment.
If the editors of our campus' all get a specific topic to present I guarantee that the delegates will walk away with more insight and ideas about student media... _________________ Gregor

...just to add to what I have said:
The one time during which a good debate began was after the Studentwire and Jo's Toolkit presentation. Why? Because the presentation raised issues that the delegates came to talk about... student media related issues...
Where the presenters of those talks not taken seriously? If not so, then there would have been little debate afterwards...
...also, time cut the discussion short, that was unfortunate, cause it was going places...with more student media orientate presentations and representatives, there would be way more scope to allow dialogue afterwards...and the dialogue is what then creates ideas / solves issues etc... _________________ Gregor

I do think that there is scope for a bit of introspection at the next Captivate conference!
