My personal vision for next year's Captivate makes a bit more room for discussion and debate with the end of critically examining ourselves as student journalists and the roles we have to play in catering for our audiences on our particular campuses.

I therefore propose that there be a discussion forum which starts the conference off with an agenda which we will hopefully be decided on before the conference begins- one of the reasons we set this forum up was to discuss such an agenda.

I envision the session taking place with the editors and station managers sitting in front of the audience made up of their colleagues and each presenting what their newspaper or radio station is about, its print run/listenership figures, funding structure and any burning issues they want to raise. We then go forward with the discussion of the topics on the agenda and hopefully come to consensus on what possible solutions are/what is to be done etc.

In this way we can come together under the banner of student journalism and campus media in solidarity for our cause.

On to my vision for the speakers at the conference:

I envision a different conference layout compared to the conference of 2006. While there is scope to have lectures and talks, I would like to see more workshops dealing with specific challenges facing student media and how to deal with them- in that way, attendance to the conference actually gives the delegates something more to take away with them (see the workshop topic for more on this).

These are my ideas at this very early stage and I have yet to consult with my executive and organising committees on my vision. However, in the interest of time and input, I am making them known publicly here as I feel very strongly about this and I also feel that if we can begin as early as possible on the organising of this conference the better is will be for everyone. Cool
