Here is my personal vision for workshops for the conference of 2007. Please note, this vision is my own and I have not yet had time to discuss is with my executive or organising committees.

In my view, as I have stated in the topic below, the conference should be run as a dynamic set of workshops and talks which will run concurrently during the weekend and deal with specific issues in the hope to create an environment that is both stimulating as well as informative for all who attend them.

There will obviously be talks and discussions which will be for everyone and will therefore be scheduled as such.

Some ideas for workshops are as follows:

Media Management- the non-editorial/content related issues and challenges we face as top-level managers in our student media organisations and how to best deal with these. Issues such as logistics, finance and managing people as opposed to just managing a publication or radio station.

Effective Distribution- how to formulate effective and efficient distribution strategies on a budget.

The Attraction of Adspend- how to formulate an effective way of attracting advertisers to your newspaper, thus bolstering the newspaper's funds.

Audience research strategies- focus group research vs other forms and how to do them in an efficient manner.

A weekend long general journalistic skills workshop- specifically designed for non-executive student media staff members, dealing with basics of reporting etc.

An in-house training strategy brainstorm- a space for us to examine our resources within each of our particular universities and use these to improve the quality of our media product.

The internet and convergence of print and online media- a space to examine and learn about the different approaches to content management and workflows between the net and the print media.

How to get ABC and the equivalent accreditation for radio- a space to talk about how to get official recognition of your circulation figures etc.

PLEASE NOTE: this is not a final program, I have not finalised any of the items on this list, I have not found speakers or workshop leaders for most of this list as I have not had time to begin looking yet- I am merely throwing this out there for comments, suggestions and advice and maybe even some pointers as to how to make these workshops a reality if you like any or all of these ideas.

Please, I need your input.

This is a great list so far - I like where this is going!

"A weekend long general journalistic skills workshop" sounds good but would be very difficult to perform since skill workshops need A LOT of time, participation, and practice.

Personally, and this in light of content being distributed nationally between papers and the online student media sphere growing, the issue of Copyright and Creative Commons is very important to present.

Excellent idea Gregor- I think a talk on Creative Commons and copyrighting in general would be a good addition to the conference.

I put the weekend long journalistic skills training workshop at Tash Joseph's request (for those of you who don't know she works at the Rhodes Communication Division and is in charge of the student media training course which she will be running for student media at Rhodes next year)- She says she has a plan of how to do the training course in a weekend...so I put it in!

Cool, come on, step right up and dot be shy, lets hear some more comments! Very Happy
